A new study demonstrated that computer models of gut metabolism can predict which probiotics will successfully establish themselves in a person’s gut and how different prebiotics affect production of health-promoting short-chain fatty acids. The findings were published February 19th in the open-access journal PLOS Biology by Sean Gibbons of the Institute for Systems Biology, US, and colleagues.
PHILADELPHIA— A new electronic implant system can help lab‑grown pancreatic cells mature and function properly, potentially providing a basis for novel, cell-based therapies for diabetes. The approach, developed by researchers at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania and the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences at Harvard University, incorporates an ultrathin mesh of conductive wires into growing pancreatic tissue, according to a study published today in Science.
Harvard researchers have developed OpenMetabolics, an open-source, smartphone-based activity monitor that uses machine learning and leg motion to estimate calories burned.
uOttawa researchers are exploring “exercise mimetics”: compounds that could mimic the mental health benefits of exercise for people unable to work out due to functional limitations or symptoms of depression.
These treatments could trigger muscle-to-brain signals that lower inflammation and boost brain health, aiding seniors, stroke survivors, and others who can’t exercise conventionally.
