Researchers at Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) have pinpointed a cellular target that could enhance the way osteoporosis and other metabolic bone diseases are diagnosed and treated. The findings, published recently in JCI Insight, reveal that circulating osteoclast precursor cells (cOCPs) play a pivotal role in bone loss. The study is also the first of its kind to establish a connection between cellular biomarkers and osteoporosis, offering a potential pathway for earlier detection and more effective therapies.

Antarctica: Historic drilling campaign reaches more than 1.2-million-year-old ice

The fourth Antarctic campaign of the “Beyond EPICA - Oldest Ice” project, funded by the European Commission, has achieved a historic milestone for climate science. An international team of scientists successfully drilled a 2,800-meter-long ice core, reaching the bedrock beneath the Antarctic ice sheet. These ice samples are expected to unveil, for the first time, critical details about Earth's climate and atmospheric history, extending beyond 800,000 years ago and showing a continuous record of the history of our climate as far back as 1.2 million years, and probably beyond. Coordinated by the Institute of Polar Sciences of the National Research Council of Italy (Cnr-Isp), the project aims to resolve one of climate science's most complex mysteries.

World first - First ever transplant of frozen testicular tissue after chemotherapy during childhood provides hope for fertility restoration

In a world premier, cryopreserved immature testicular tissue was reintroduced after 16 years in an infertile man who underwent chemotherapy in childhood. With this transplant, doctors and researchers hope to trigger sperm cell production and restore the patient’s fertility. The procedure was successful, and the patient is recovering well. In one year from now, the team will check for the presence of mature sperm. This transplant is the outcome of years of research of Vrije Universiteit Brussel and Brussels IVF, the centre for reproductive medicine of UZ Brussel. It is the consequence of another world first, following the launch of a cryopreservation programme for testicular tissue in 2002.
