ORNL researchers are developing intelligent automation systems that help manufacturers operate efficiently with smaller workforces. Work at the Manufacturing Demonstration Facility integrates robotics, sensing and advanced controls to increase flexibility and reduce production time. These technologies are strengthening U.S. manufacturing competitiveness by supporting faster deployment and securing domestic supply chains.

Ultra-minimally invasive spine surgery performed at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center uses small incisions, specialized cameras and narrow surgical tools to take pressure off of spinal nerves. Most patients are walking very shortly after surgery and return home the same day. Unlike spinal fusion, which permanently joins bones in the spine, endoscopic surgery often avoids the need for screws, rods and cages.

Collaborative research from IIT Gandhinagar, IIT Jodhpur, IISER Kolkata and the University of Pennsylvania found that active enzymes in the fluid around a cell boosted the cell’s uptake of transferrin (an iron-carrying protein). The study demonstrates in cultured cells that a local chemical reaction can influence how efficiently molecules reach and enter cells. The research could potentially open new directions for controlling molecular transport for therapeutic applications. 

With support from U.S. Department of Energy National Laboratories, including Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Texas-based company Element3 has launched the first domestic lithium mining project in 50 years. This achievement is likely to have a big impact, turning the United States from a net importer of lithium to a country well on the path to greater energy independence, national security, and economic strength.
