The International ESG Association (IESGA), under the leadership of Professor Yong Sik Ok and Professor Jay Hyuk Rhee, is advancing ESG-driven research that connects scientific agricultural solutions with corporate sustainability strategies. As Pohang Iron and Steel Company (POSCO) International recently partnered with IESGA for joint research on “Soil as an Asset” and sustainable agriculture, researchers are applying a biochar-based carbon-reduction technology for palm plantations to achieve sustainability goals.

In March 2026, Leah Backhus, MD, MPH, Thelma and Henry Doelger Professor of Cardiovascular Surgery at the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Stanford Medicine, performed the first PITAC procedure for mesothelioma in North America in a joint effort with Byrne Lee, MD, from the Department of Surgery. The second case was just performed in May 2026. Stanford Health Care is one of a few centers in the world to offer PITAC to its patients.

In a study published in the journal Alzheimer’s & Dementia, a team led by Shannon L. Macauley, Ph.D., an associate professor of physiology in the UK College of Medicine, and first author Nicholas J. Constantino, Ph.D., a recent UK doctoral graduate, revealed that microglia are the primary drivers of sleep loss. By using a drug to temporarily remove these cells in animal models, the researchers successfully restored over two hours of sleep per day, providing a new target for treating the disease that Macauley described as “paradigm shifting.”
