The Mount Sinai Health System today announced that Lisa M. Satlin, MD, the Herbert H. Lehman Professor of Pediatrics and Chair of the Jack and Lucy Clark Department of Pediatrics at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, and Pediatrician-in-Chief of Mount Sinai Kravis Children’s Hospital, has been named the 2026 recipient of the American Society of Pediatric Nephrology (ASPN) Founders’ Award. The honor recognizes a lifetime of outstanding contributions to pediatric nephrology through research, education, clinical care, and leadership.

Study finds benefits in being older college student while working

The number of post-traditional students, or those who do not come to college straight from high school, is growing across the country. Researchers from the University of Kansas and Florida International University analyzed a group of students in a highly competitive engineering program and found some factors, like being older than 25, working while going to school, commuting and having dependents were positive predictors of key academic outcomes, including continuous GPA, graduating in six years and student retention. The findings can help schools support post-traditional students, an ever more important group of students as an enrollment cliff approaches, the researchers argue.

The Boyce Thompson Institute (BTI) is pleased to announce that Dr. Georg Jander and Delanie Sickler, Education and Outreach Director at BTI, have received a multi-year award from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food and Agriculture Non-Formal Education (FANE) program. The funding will support an ambitious new initiative titled P-BIOTEK: Plant Biotechnology Innovation, Outreach, Training, and Education for K-12 Students.

This four-year project aims to expand access to biotechnology education for K-12 students, particularly those from underserved communities in rural Upstate New York, while fostering meaningful engagement between scientists and the public.
