Western standards behind the gender equality paradox

Previous research has asserted that women and men in gender-equal countries differ more in their preferences than women and men in less equal countries, for example by making more traditional educational choices. This relationship is known as the gender-equality paradox. However, new research from Uppsala University now shows that it is not possible to draw these conclusions from the data studied. The paper, published in the journal PNAS, shows that the question is based on Western perspectives and conditions and cannot be applied to other countries.

Doctoral dissertation explores women’s roles in peacebuilding

Women play a crucial role in peacebuilding in conflict affected societies, particularly through grassroot and civil society movements such as mediation and activism. However, they are rarely included in official peace negotiation teams. Julia Vassileva, a doctoral candidate at the School of Governance, Law and Society at Tallinn University, studied why women are still underrepresented in peace processes.

Doctoral dissertation: Serfdom in the Baltic region was seen as similar to slavery in the United States and the British Empire.

Slavery in the 18th-19th century United States and British Empire and serfdom in the Russian Empire have been compared in previous studies, but those works have generally overlooked the particularities of the Baltic provinces. In his doctoral dissertation defended at the School of Humanities at Tallinn University, Andre Kruusmaa focused specifically on the Baltic provinces and compared serfdom in this unique region to the slavery practiced in the southern United States and in the colonies of the British Empire in the Western hemisphere. The focus of the study was primarily on ideas that supported both slavery and serfdom, where it became clear that the two were often seen as similar practices by contemporaries and were often defended using similar arguments.

Study provides novel insights into dialogue-based teaching intervention in Chinese classrooms

Dialogic pedagogy has been highly valued and promoted in classrooms globally over the past few decades. However, there persists a stereotype that view Chinese classrooms as authoritative and full of rote learning. A new study has systematically reviewed several dialogue-based teaching interventions implemented in Chinese elementary and secondary schools. This review suggests that these interventions were mostly integrated with school subject fields and exert both cognitive and noncognitive effects on Chinese students

Evolution patterns of water ecology and systematic governance in the Yangtze river basin

The Yangtze River is the mother river of the Chinese nation. It plays a crucial role in ecological functions and economic and social development. Dr. Dianchang Wang, from the National Engineering Research Center of Eco-environment in the Yangtze River Economic Belt of China Three Gorges Corporation, led a research team to unveil the evolutionary characteristics of the water ecological pattern in the Yangtze River Basin from multiple dimensions, taking the past century as a temporal perspective. They identified different evolutionary stages of the basin’s water ecological pattern and their driving mechanisms, and proposed water system governance strategies for the new era that aim at harmonious coexistence between humans and nature.

Link among racial identity, GPAs, alcohol use studied

A UC Riverside study found that female students of color who reported more exploration of their ethnic-racial identity also held higher GPAs. Male students of color who said they had more frequent positive conversations about race also held higher GPAs, while those who reported more frequent negative conversations about race reported more alcohol use.
