Cambridge scientists have shown that girls and boys show differences in what they pay attention to, even at birth. Since these differences are present so early, it is possible they emerge due to prenatal factors. The findings suggest that some psychological differences between males and females (such the development of social skills) may be influenced by both prenatal biology as well as later experience.
Social behavior is heritable but heterogeneous. An international team of EAGLE and R2D2-MH consortia researchers, led by the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics, Nijmegen, the Netherlands, conducted a large-scale genome-wide study of social behaviour in context, investigating two social domains at different ages and with multiple reporters. Identified patterns of genetic signals and genetic correlations, including links with mental health outcomes such as ADHD and autism, differed by context, offering new insight into neurodevelopment.
New RMIT University research suggests environmental awareness alone may not stop people buying ultra-fast fashion, with price and convenience trumping sustainability concerns for shoppers.
While burnout in the medical field is well documented, affecting about half of healthcare workers, far fewer studies have explored ways to address it. Now, a Northwestern Medicine study has found one simple intervention may help. In the new study, 724 Northwestern Medicine physicians and neurology staff and Chicago-area social workers laid in a quiet, dimly lit room and listened to 20 minutes of live or pre-recorded restorative improvisatory music consisting of slow, meandering melodies interspersed with periods of silence. (Listen to recordings used in the study.)
After the intervention, the clinicians reported improvements in mood and energy levels, with average self-reported energy increasing from 56% before the intervention to 83% after it.
