Anion effects and spontaneous resolution of fluorescent tripyridinyl Co(II) spin crossover complexes
Tsinghua University PressThree novel cobalt(II) complexes have been synthesized to investigate the spin crossover behavior. The study highlights how counteranions and the solvents strictly tune magnetic properties and induce spontaneous resolution into chiral crystals, promoting the development of multifunctional molecular materials that combine switchable magnetism with optical and chiral features.

Breaking traditional wisdom: oxygenated groups hinder H₂O₂ electrosynthesis on CoNC catalysts
Tsinghua University PressThe incorporation of oxygen functional groups (OFGs) into cobalt-nitrogen-carbon (CoNC) catalysts is widely regarded as a promising strategy for enhancing hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) electrosynthesis via the two-electron oxygen reduction reaction (2e− ORR). A new study challenges the long-held belief that oxygenated groups enhance CoNC catalysts' H2O2 production, offering critical insights for sustainable electrocatalysis.

Headline Trunk stability emerges as a particularly relevant physical capacity during aging
Universidad Miguel Hernandez de ElcheResearchers assessed age-related changes in trunk stability, whole-body dynamic balance, hip strength, and functional mobility in 127 physically active adults aged 30 to 80 years. Trunk stability showed the most pronounced age-related decline, particularly in men, and was the variable most closely associated with whole-body dynamic balance among older adults.

Applications of large-scale artificial intelligence models in bioinformatics
Higher Education PressHigh-throughput technologies are currently flooding life sciences with massive, highly complex multi-omics and biological imaging datasets. Classical machine learning and deep learning methodologies, while useful, often hit major roadblocks. These include high dependence on high-quality annotated data, weak generalization to unseen datasets, and significant computational bottlenecks when dealing with massive data scales.

A multi-condition diffusion framework enables precise prediction of drug-induced transcriptional changes
Higher Education PressDeciphering how drugs alter cellular gene expression is essential for new drug screening and personalized medical treatment. Scientists mainly rely on high-throughput sequencing to capture drug perturbation transcriptomic profiles, yet this experimental method suffers from high costs and long testing cycles, making it impossible to cover countless combinations of chemical compounds, cell lines and administration dosages.

Occult metastatic non-small cell lung cancer presenting as sepsis with multi-organ dysfunction: a diagnostic challenge, a case report
Higher Education PressA 67-year-old woman with no known chronic illnesses presented with bilateral leg swelling, weakness, and fatigue, rapidly progressing to septic shock, acute kidney injury, and deep vein thrombosis. Chest imaging revealed a pulmonary mass, hepatic lesions, and a brain metastasis. Despite broadspectrum antibiotics, cultures remained negative and her condition worsened. A liver biopsy confirmed metastatic nonsmall cell lung adenocarcinoma. The case underscores that occult malignancy can mimic or coexist with sepsis, and failure to improve within 48–72 hours of antimicrobial therapy should prompt early evaluation for cancer, multidisciplinary involvement, and timely goals-of-care discussions..

Head and/or neck cancer deviates the tryptophan, arginine and glutamine pathways: applications in diagnosis and prognosis
Higher Education PressA pilot study from Venezuelan and U.S. institutions reveals significant metabolic reprogramming of tryptophan, arginine, and glutamine pathways in head and neck carcinoma (HNC) patients. Serum tryptophan and the arginine/putrescine ratio emerged as potential dynamic biomarkers for monitoring treatment response, while the glutamine-to-glutamate shift indicates enhanced glutaminolysis in active tumours. The findings provide a rationale for larger validation studies and offer low-cost analytical tools for resource-limited settings.
