Whole-class mental health sessions in schools have a small but significant effect in reducing depression and anxiety symptoms, according to new analysis led by researchers at UCL (University College London) and Anna Freud.

Min-Young Kim of the University of Kansas conducted a study in which she observed how an 8th grade English language arts class studied a poem. By using practices like "languaging," thinking aloud and holding students accountable for how they thought about material, the researcher found the class and teacher worked together to form their own social constructions of thinking. The findings show students are not always simply recipients of information from teachers, but engage more depply when they contribute on how a class thinks about subject matter.
