Currently, the most efficient way to create photon pairs requires sending lightwaves through a crystal large enough to see without a microscope. In a paper published today in Nature Photonics, a team led by Columbia Engineering researchers and collaborators, describe a new method for creating these photon pairs that achieves higher performance on a much smaller device using less energy.

Recently published research by Nunes et al. in the journal Weed Science shows planting soybean into a green, living cover crop provides effective control for some of the nation’s most troublesome weeds when integrated with pre-emergence (PRE) herbicides. More specifically, planting soybean over a cereal rye cover crop demonstrates an effective practice to both produce soybean and to suppress two problematic Amaranthus weed species: waterhemp and Palmer amaranth.

In a significant step toward creating a sustainable and circular economy, Rice University researchers have published a landmark study in the journal Carbon demonstrating that carbon nanotube (CNT) fibers can be fully recycled without any loss in their structure or properties. This discovery positions CNT fibers as a sustainable alternative to traditional materials like metals, polymers and the much larger carbon fibers, which are notoriously difficult to recycle.

Lehigh University bioenginering researcher Tomas Gonzalez-Fernandez recently secured funding through the National Science Foundation’s Faculty Early Career Development Program (CAREER) for his research that will explore how combining CRISPR with biomaterials can make the technology both safer and more effective for therapeutic use.
