In the near future, you may not need to touch a keypad to select a tip or pay for large purchases. All it may take is a swipe, tap or other quick gesture.

The innovation utilizes near-field communication (NFC), the short-range wireless technology embedded in smartphones, payment cards and terminals, passports and key fobs. UBC computer scientists say it could help prevent the spread of germs through touchpads, speed up transactions, and improve accessibility for users unable to press buttons.

n a new longitudinal study, researchers examined EU and U.S. news and media websites to determine how online content providers adapted their responses to the GDPR over time, and whether restrictions on online tracking affected outcomes such as the quantity of content and visitors’ engagement. The study found that while EU websites made changes and adapted, they continued to produce quality content and engage audiences at levels comparable to their U.S. counterparts.

George Mason University faculty member Y. Alicia Hong, a digital behavioral health interventionist, will support older adults in honing their digital technology skills. The program, through an interdisciplinary partnership, will pair youth and older adults to practice real-life AI scenarios.

Drawing on cutting-edge technology and interdisciplinary expertise, researchers are launching Menopause Health Engineering, a new initiative uniting faculty from Cornell’s Ithaca campus and Weill Cornell Medicine, to uncover how menopause shapes health and disease, and to develop urgently needed treatment strategies. The inaugural team includes nine faculty across four departments, with a core in the Meinig School of Biomedical Engineering.
