Risk factors for and health status of socially isolated adults

About The Study: The overall prevalence of social isolation in this study was 3%, which is lower than other determinants of health, such as smoking, poverty, and inadequate health insurance. The results indicate 3 broad and likely interrelated populations at risk for social isolation, including racial and ethnic minority groups, those with financial insecurity (i.e., unemployed, uninsured, lower income), and those with chronic health conditions, with depression being a large factor.

Caregiving hours increase menopause burden, researchers find

Researchers have identified a link between the number of caregiving hours per week a woman performs and menopause symptom burden. A novel study in Mayo Clinic Proceedings, published by Elsevier, found that women caregiving for more than 15 hours a week have significantly increased odds of experiencing moderate or severe menopause symptoms. It sheds light on the adverse health outcomes associated with an increased burden of caregiving.

No scientific link found between sickle cell trait and sudden death

(WASHINGTON—Jan. 30, 2025) – A systematic literature review found no evidence to support that physical exertion without rhabdomyolysis (muscle breakdown) or heat injury can cause sudden death for individuals with sickle cell trait (SCT), nor is there any high-level evidence that SCT causes acute pain crises. These results were published today in the American Society of Hematology’s flagship journal, Blood, and informed the Society’s updated position statement on SCT.

Role of barrier films in maintaining the stability of perovskite solar cells

Flexible perovskite solar cells are promising for lightweight and versatile applications but their sensitivity to humidity and temperature poses a challenge to long-term durability. To address this, researchers from Japan have conducted a comprehensive study to test the degradation of these solar modules under extreme heat and humidity. Through accelerated testing, they identified how the water vapor transmission rates of barrier films affect the module’s stability, giving critical insights for development of durable solar cells.
