Researchers from the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM), Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, and other North American institutions, have provided the first technical description for using focused ultrasound to reliably open the blood-brain barrier. The findings, recently published in Device, pave the way for expanding the use of this experimental device to open the blood-brain barrier to improve treatments and diagnostics for patients with brain tumors and other neurological disorders.
Firearms were involved in 38.5 percent of suicides among older women from 2014-2023, up from 34.9 percent in 2014, according to a new study in JAMA Network Open. Even though older men had substantially higher firearm suicide rates than older women, the rates among older men remained relatively stable. Women represent nearly half of all new gun owners in the United States; as female gun ownership surges across many states, these findings highlight a need to better understand the immediate and long-term consequences of firearm suicides among older women, as well as develop tailored interventions to mitigate firearm suicides among all older adults.
A new national survey of over 580 school nurses and diabetes healthcare providers has revealed critical barriers to implementing the American Diabetes Association’s (ADA) Diabetes Medical Management Plan (DMMP) in schools. While the DMMP is widely recognized as a comprehensive tool, respondents identified key usability issues—including integration into clinical workflows and gaps in guidance for modern diabetes technologies like continuous glucose monitors and automated insulin delivery systems. These findings informed major revisions to the DMMP to better support school nurses and improve care for children with diabetes nationwide.
