Companies avoiding tax more likely to greenwash

New research led by Murdoch University has found that companies which aggressively avoid tax are more likely to exaggerate how environmentally responsible they are (greenwashing). The study analysed 391 Australian Securities Exchange (ASX)-listed companies between 2019 and 2022, including the period of economic disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The link between greenwashing and tax avoidance was stronger for companies with a more conservative 'defender' business strategy.

A field experiment with the Japan Marrow Donor Program showed that adding one factual sentence to HLA match letters—telling potential donors that compatible registered donors are limited—raised progression to confirmatory typing by 7.3%. The intervention was low-cost and simple, while combined messages weakened the effect. The result could help reduce donor dropout and improve stem cell transplant coordination.

Workers from Central America who have temporary protective status (TPS), which the U.S. gives to citizens of countries troubled by war and other crises, play a critical role in New York state’s economy, are highly engaged in civic and political organizations, and overwhelmingly view the U.S. as their home, according to research from the Cornell ILR School’s Worker Institute. Many are also parents of U.S.-born citizens under the age of 18 years old.

Gentle nudges for increased animal welfare

Gentle purchase incentives can lead customers to choose groceries with higher animal husbandry standards more often. A recent study at the University of Bonn at least suggests this. The researchers used two different animal welfare label posters as “nudges.” Each poster itself changed the consumer behavior of participants shopping in a virtual supermarket. The share of products with higher animal welfare standards in the shopping cart was highest when both posters were combined. Further studies have yet to clarify the extent to which the results can be transferred to real shopping situations. The study has been published in the Journal of Behavioral and Experimental Economics.
