Pickup basketball and neighborhood kickball are less common now than for generations past, giving way to more organized and formal youth sports intended to help kids get ahead, a new study suggests. Researchers found that compared to people born in earlier decades, youths born in the 1990s spent more of their recreational time playing formal sports – coached by adults and wearing uniforms – than with friends and neighbors playing informal matchups organized by kids.

Access to dialysis facilities in socioeconomically advantaged and disadvantaged communities

About The Study: This study found that as community disadvantage increased, access to dialysis facilities decreased in a stepwise fashion. Patients with end-stage kidney disease in socioeconomically disadvantaged communities had significantly fewer options for receiving hemodialysis and were more likely to live in areas without nearby dialysis facilities.

A new study by the Singapore-MIT Alliance for Research and Technology’s (SMART) Mens, Manus & Machina (M3S) interdisciplinary research group, alongside collaborators from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and National University of Singapore (NUS), has identified a strong statistical association between global air connectivity and patterns of where multinational corporations (MNCs) invest and set up subsidiaries. This is the most comprehensive global study merging 7.5 million firm records with 30 years of international flight data across more than 800 cities in 142 countries.

How “clean-up certificates” lead to better climate protection

A groundbreaking economic study calculates the effectiveness of this novel policy instrument. The underlying idea is that you are allowed to release the climate gas CO₂ into the atmosphere – but only if you promise to “clean up” later through carbon removal. The market forces activated by clean-up certificates can greatly strengthen the fight against global heating without placing an extra burden on the economy. The study was conducted by the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) and released in the top publication Journal of Environmental Economics and Management.
