A new approach to sustainable AI from assistant professor Uğur Teğin: offloading AI’s computational burden onto light
Koç UniversityFrom data silos to smart medicine: How is “dry laboratory” transforming clinical research
HEP Data Cooperation JournalsThis study aims to develop a medical “dry laboratory” model that treats healthcare data as the primary research subject and employs computational science and AI as core methodologies. Based on the practice of a large tertiary hospital, we present a construction framework featuring a full-cycle model spanning data cultivation, governance, value extraction, and ecological feedback—transforming medical data from a static resource into a living asset. Innovatively, the “dry laboratory” was integrated into the residency training rotation to systematically cultivate data literacy. Practice has shown that the framework establishes the “dry laboratory” as a digital research entity, creating a closed-loop system that integrates clinical practice with data analytics, significantly enhancing the usability of multimodal data and enabling scalable training in data competence. In conclusion, the medical “dry laboratory” represents a new digital research paradigm distinct from traditional wet laboratories. Its implementation provides a reference framework and introduces an integrated “dry-wet” research model combining wet-lab experiments with data cultivation, demonstrating significant value for enhancing medical innovation, cultivating interdisciplinary talent, and advancing smart healthcare.
As new EU requirements approach, KTU researchers propose a tool for assessing digital building models
Kaunas University of TechnologyManvydas Mikulėnas, a PhD student at Kaunas University of Technology (KTU), supervised by Professor Lina Šeduikytė, is investigating whether digital building models contain enough data to assess whole-life carbon footprints and circularity – the potential to keep materials and components in use. As part of the research, the team developed a prototype that identifies gaps in model data. Missing information already makes climate impact calculations more difficult and could make it harder to reuse building components in the future.

After 88 Years, KRISS redetermines a key strontium frequency with 50 times better precision
National Research Council of Science & TechnologyThe Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science (KRISS, President Dr. Ho Seong Lee) has re-measured a key transition frequency of the strontium (Sr) atom for the first time in 88 years since 1938, using a photonic grating chip, and has established a new absolute frequency value with a measurement uncertainty reduced by more than 50 times. By securing an accurate reference value needed for next-generation quantum technologies ahead of time, this achievement is expected to greatly contribute to the precise control and miniaturization of quantum devices, including atomic clocks and neutral-atom quantum computers.

Sunlight and precise nutrient management, keys to success in urban agriculture
Universitat Autonoma de BarcelonaFactors such as sunlight and stage-specific nutrient application determine crop success in urban agriculture, far beyond fixed recipes or miracle solutions. This is demonstrated by an eight-year study conducted by the Institute of Environmental Science and Technology at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (ICTA-UAB), Spain, in its build-integrated rooftop greenhouse, thermally connected to the facility itself, and located within the university campus.
