An emerging technology lets EV drivers tap into energy from their vehicles' batteries to help manage power to their homes and could provide serious economic and environmental benefits.

The quality and quantity of carbohydrates in the diet play a decisive role in the development of dementias. This is according to a combined study carried out by the Nutrition and Metabolic Health (NuMeH) research group of the Universitat Rovira i Virgili (URV), the Centre for Environmental, Food and Toxicological Technology (TecnATox), and the Pere Virgili Health Research Institute (IISPV). The results of this research have been published in the scientific journal International Journal of Epidemiology.

Weed control is essential in apple orchards because weeds compete with trees for nutrients, water and sunlight, which can reduce fruit yields. However, physically removing weeds is not only labor-intensive, but it also can damage soil structure and tree roots. Using chemical sprays to kill weeds can lead to other problems, such as pollution, herbicide resistance and excess chemical residues on apples. Another option called precision weed management — detecting and measuring weeds with high accuracy then applying small amounts of herbicide to control them efficiently — can help farmers avoid wasting chemicals or causing injury to crops or the environment, according to a team of researchers at Penn State. To help growers achieve such precise management, the researchers are developing an automated, robotic weed-management system.

Bacteria may be the next frontier in cancer treatment, according to a team led by researchers at Penn State that devised a new approach of creating bacteria-derived mixtures — or cocktails — to help fight bladder cancer. They tested their mixtures of good and bad bacteria on patient tumor samples and in mice, finding that the cocktails significantly boost the immune system’s ability to fight cancer. 

A review paper by scientists at Beijing Institute of Technology reviews the current progress of hybrid magneto-acoustic actuation to address the limitations of single magnetic or acoustic actuation.
