Can reasoning AI grade reflective writing for teachers? A medical education case study offers a cautious answer
Society of China University JournalsGenerative AI is moving into many corners of medical education. One of the most tempting uses is also one of the most time-consuming parts of teaching: assessing student work. For short-answer questions with clear reference answers, large language models have already shown some ability to score responses. But reflective writing is different. It has no single correct answer. It asks students to draw on coursework, clinical exposure, personal experience, and professional values. Can AI still judge such work reliably? A case study published in the Chinese Journal of Medical Education Research offers a cautious answer. Researchers from West China Second University Hospital, Sichuan University; the National Research Center for Educational Materials; and West China Medical Center examined how reasoning-capable large language models performed when assessing reflective writing assignments by medical students. They found that the models could generate relatively complete comments, but still showed clear limitations in scoring consistency, scoring stability, alignment with the grading rubric, and judgments related to academic integrity. The authors conclude that current reasoning-capable large language models are not yet effective tools for independently assessing medical students’ reflective writing. A more realistic path, they argue, is not substitution, but human–AI collaboration.

Enhancing battery safety under fast charging conditions through spray-based immersion cooling
National Research Council of Science & TechnologyA research team led by Dr. Jinsub Kim, Principal Researcher at the Heat Pump Research Center of the Research Institute of Carbon-neutral Energy Machinery at the Korea Institute of Machinery and Materials (KIMM, President Seog-Hyeon Ryu), developed a spray-based immersion cooling technology using dielectric liquid to mitigate thermal runaway and fire risks in lithium-ion battery packs. The technology directly sprays dielectric liquid onto the upper side of the battery pack while partially immersing the lower side, and its cooling performance was validated under rapid charge-discharge conditions of an actual lithium-ion battery pack.

Study proposes an explainable machine-learning framework for mortality risk in liver-transplant candidates with HCC
Health Data ScienceThis study proposes a framework combining LightGBM, SHAP, and supervised clustering for mortality-risk assessment among liver-transplant candidates with HCC. Eight SHAP-selected variables and supervised clustering identified seven subgroups with increasing risk levels.
The work offers a method for modeling the dual risks of liver dysfunction and tumor progression, but it does not establish that the model improves clinical decisions or patient outcomes.

Hands-on earthquake program boosts seismic awareness among Colombian students
Escuela Superior Politecnica del LitoralThe statistical analysis, based on the Wilcoxon test with a significance level of p < 0.05, confirmed substantial improvements across all participant groups. Overall, the ability to distinguish between hypocenter and epicenter increased by 45.39%; understanding of seismic magnitude improved by 39.01%; and the visual identification of structural vulnerabilities increased between 25% and 38%, with moderate to large effect sizes.
