Genome editing shows more consistent trait improvement than traditional transgenesis: Global meta-analysis
Higher Education PressPublished in Engineering, this meta-analysis covering 154 papers systematically compares transgenesis (TG) and genome editing (GE) for animal trait improvement. GE delivers larger, wider-ranging gains in growth and disease resistance yet shows taxon-specific effects. Trait enhancements weaken with animal age and in F1 offspring. The findings offer evidence for lab technique refinement and agricultural biotechnology policy-making.

Balancing carbon gains and infrastructure costs of autonomous vehicle rollout
Higher Education PressAutonomous vehicles promise greener, smoother urban travel, yet their environmental pros and cons are far more complicated than many assume. This new analysis from Engineering breaks down dual carbon trade-offs: AVs cut traffic emissions via platooning and shared fleets, but heavier electric trucks and repeated vehicle platoons speed up road wear and raise infrastructure carbon costs. It also outlines targeted vehicle, road and policy fixes to balance efficiency gains and infrastructure burdens for sustainable automated mobility.

Bringing general practice education earlier: expert consensus provides guidance for teaching clinical medical students outside GP-targeted programs
Society of China University JournalsAs China continues to advance the Healthy China strategy and a tiered healthcare delivery system, general practice education is becoming relevant not only to students in GP-targeted training programs, but to all clinical medical students. A newly published expert consensus in the Chinese Journal of Medical Education Research focuses on general practice teaching for clinical medical students who are not enrolled in GP-oriented programs. It addresses common challenges such as unclear training objectives, weak practical teaching, and inconsistent faculty and course evaluation systems. The consensus recommends a staged pathway of early exposure, theoretical learning, and practice-based training, calls for Introduction to General Practice to be offered as a required course, and proposes a comprehensive assessment framework covering knowledge, skills, and professional values. It aims to provide a reference for medical schools seeking to standardize general practice education at the institutional education stage.

Health security disparities in the Eastern Mediterranean Region: A comparative analysis using an integrated MCDM and clustering approach
KeAi Communications Co., Ltd.A team of researchers from Yemen and Saudi Arabia analyzed and compared health security performance (HSP) between Gulf Cooperation Council and non-Gulf Cooperation Council countries within the Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMR) for 2019 and 2021, recognizing the critical role of health security in managing global health threats. The study utilized data from the Global Health Security Index (GHSI) for 2019 and 2021. Key health security priorities were identified using the entropy objective weighting method. The VIKOR (VIseKriterijumska Optimizacija I Kompromisno Resenje) method was employed to rank countries based on overall performance. K-means clustering was applied to group countries with similar health security profiles. Pearson’s and Spearman’s rank correlation coefficients were used to assess relationships between independent HSP indicators and overall performance scores. A significant shift in health security priorities within the EMR was observed between 2019 and 2021, with prevention gaining prominence. Gulf Cooperation Council countries emphasized detection and reporting, while non-Gulf Cooperation Council countries prioritized health systems and prevention. Gulf Cooperation Council countries, particularly Qatar and Saudi Arabia, consistently demonstrated strong HSP. Conversely, non-Gulf Cooperation Council countries facing conflict and instability, such as Yemen, Somalia, and Syria, exhibited weaker performance. Health system capacity, prevention, detection and reporting, and risk environment showed robust correlations with overall HSP. This study underscores the necessity for tailored, adaptive policies to address HSP disparities across regions, highlighting investment in prevention, detection, and reporting. It stresses international collaboration, improved policy implementation, and ongoing research to enhance global health security systems across diverse contexts.

Study reveals an “Intention–behavior gap” in clinical teachers’ adoption of AI-assisted teaching
Society of China University JournalsArtificial intelligence is quickly moving into medical education. Hospitals and medical schools are exploring how AI can help generate cases, prepare teaching materials, design assessments, and support more personalized learning. But for clinical teachers, being open to AI does not necessarily mean using it in day-to-day teaching.
A new study published in the Chinese Journal of Medical Education Research highlights that gap. Researchers from Peking University First Hospital conducted a questionnaire survey among clinical teachers at a university-affiliated hospital, distributing 359 questionnaires and collecting 335 valid responses and found that teachers reported relatively high willingness to adopt AI-assisted teaching, but much lower levels of actual use. The finding points to a practical challenge for medical education: AI tools may be widely discussed and increasingly accessible, but their integration into clinical teaching still depends on trust, support, and usable implementation pathways.
