New research from the University of Waterloo suggests that more than creativity is at play. Behind many great melodies, researchers found something surprisingly powerful: symmetry. Their work shows that advanced algebra can reveal deep musical patterns that are not always obvious by ear or even on a written score. 

The findings could help composers better understand what makes melodies work, as the study offers a recipe for generating new melodies that follow specific symmetry rules, opening new creative possibilities for composers and researchers. 

A team led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Çiğdem Maner at Koç University has identified the earliest evidence of indigo-dyed textiles and single-needle knitting (nålbinding) in Anatolia at Beycesultan Höyük. Dating to c. 1915–1595 BC, the fragments were analyzed using advanced scientific methods. Published in Antiquity, the findings reveal sophisticated knowledge of plant fibers and dye chemistry in Bronze Age Anatolia and suggest the production of high-status textiles.

Despite their widespread use in various applications, synthetic polymers such as polyethylene (PE) remain susceptible to structural deformation when exposed to stress. In a new study, scientists from Japan have utilized focused electron beam (FEB) irradiation to precisely induce micro-voids and nano-scale fibrils to improve the mechanical strength of PE. Following irradiation with FEB, PE demonstrated minimal crack opening and prevented further crack propagation. This study can fuel the development of superior polymer-based materials.

Efficient generation and reliable distribution of quantum entangled states is crucial for emerging quantum applications, including quantum key distribution (QKDs). However, conventional polarization-based entanglement states are not stable over long fiber networks. While time-bin entanglement offers a promising alternative, it requires complex infrastructure. In this study, researchers explore how stable time-bin entangled states can be generated and distributed using commercially available components, paving the way for practical quantum communication networks.

Researchers have developed a multilevel dispersion strategy that synergistically combines in situ confined growth, ultrasonication, atomization, and rotational shearing to incorporate triphenylamine-based graphdiyne nanoparticles into polymer membranes for ethanol recovery. The method can effectively mitigate nanoparticle agglomeration, a persistent challenge that diminishes the efficacy of graphdiyne. The resulting mixed matrix membrane demonstrated a permeate flux of 2.35 kg·m⁻²·h⁻¹ alongside a separation factor of 11.31 for a 5 wt% ethanol/water solution. Compared to the stirring-casting method, these performances represent enhancements of 41% in permeate flux and 80% in separation factor.

The increasing emission of carbon dioxide (CO₂) has intensified global efforts toward its conversion and utilization. Electrocatalytic CO₂ reduction reaction (CO₂RR) has emerged as a promising sustainable strategy to address interconnected energy and environmental challenges. Among the various products of CO₂ reduction, methanol has attracted significant research attention as both an essential chemical feedstock and a promising renewable energy carrier. This review comprehensively summarizes recent advances in the electrocatalytic conversion of CO₂ to methanol, with systematic discussions on fundamental reaction mechanisms and pathways, innovative reactor configurations, diverse catalysts, and auxiliary optimization strategies. Particular emphasis is placed on categorizing and evaluating various catalysts, including mono-/bimetallic catalysts, molecular catalysts, enzyme catalysts, and carbon-based materials, while exploring their structure-activity relationships and performance enhancement strategies for improving methanol selectivity. Furthermore, the techno-economic viability of current processes is analyzed, assessing the cost-effectiveness and commercial potential of electrocatalytic methanol production. Finally, based on current research progress and existing challenges, key research directions are outlined to advance the development of commercially feasible electrocatalytic CO₂-to-methanol systems, providing practical guidance for future investigations.
