The American Heart Association’s Impact with Heart awards showcase two equitable health organizations funded by its venture capital and venture philanthropy programs.

A new project to address vulnerabilities in the UK’s food supply chain – and protect the country from potential shortages – has been launched thanks to funding from UK Research and Innovation (UKRI).

The £2 million initiative is building on recent research that found over 40% of food experts believe widespread civil unrest linked to food shortages, such as demonstrations and violent looting, is possible or likely in the UK within the next 10 years.

Approaches to regulating artificial intelligence (AI), from creation to deployment and use in practice, vary internationally. Daryl Lim, Penn State Dickinson Law associate dean for research and innovation, H. Laddie Montague Jr. Chair in Law and Penn State Institute for Computational and Data Sciences (ICDS) co-hire, has proposed an “equity by design” framework to better govern the technology and protect marginalized communities from potential harm in an article published on Jan. 27 in the Duke Technology Law Review.

About The Study: In this cross-sectional study, underrepresented in medicine internal medicine residents remained underrepresented compared with their program’s county populations. These findings should inform racial and ethnic diversity policies to address the continuing underrepresentation among graduate medical education physicians, which adversely impacts the care of historically underserved communities. 

Researchers have identified a link between the number of caregiving hours per week a woman performs and menopause symptom burden. A novel study in Mayo Clinic Proceedings, published by Elsevier, found that women caregiving for more than 15 hours a week have significantly increased odds of experiencing moderate or severe menopause symptoms. It sheds light on the adverse health outcomes associated with an increased burden of caregiving.
