MHP-Net: A revolutionary AI model for accurate liver tumor segmentation for diagnosis and therapy

Signaling a major advance in small-data AI for medical imaging, a research team from Institute of Science Tokyo has developed a novel artificial intelligence model called “MHP-Net,” which delivers cutting-edge performance in liver tumor segmentation with a limited dataset. Unlike conventional models that require thousands of patient cases, this model uses sampling of 3D patches obtained from 7 to 28 tumors. Also, it outperforms the top entry of the MICCAI 2017 (worldwide liver tumor segmentation competition).

Climate change linked to dangerous sleep apnea

The first study of its kind to outline how global warming is expected to affect breathing during sleep and impact the world’s health, wellbeing and economy. Published in leading journal, Nature Communications, it found that rising temperatures increase the severity of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and that under the most likely climate change scenarios, the societal burden of OSA is expected to double in most countries over the next 75 years.

EuroHeartPath project launched to transform cardiovascular care across Europe

EuroHeartPath aims to transform cardiovascular care across Europe by analysing how care is organised and identifying best practices.

The project will conduct 18 ‘pathfinder’ studies to improve early detection, diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment of heart conditions, with a strong focus on prevention.

The four key study areas will be AI & machine learning, digital health, point-of-care testing and technology & robotics.

The project’s vision is a future with significantly reduced burden of heart disease on patients, healthcare systems, and economies.

Professor Elke Grimminger-Seidensticker, a researcher at Paderborn University, has received the ‘Fellowship Award’ from the ‘Association Internationale des Écoles Supérieures d'Éducation Physique’ (AIESEP) in recognition of her academic achievements in the field of sport pedagogy and didactics. The awards ceremony was held at the end of May during the annual conference in Florida, USA. The AIESEP is the central scientific organisation for sport pedagogy and teacher training on an international level. The AIESEP states that ‘this is the highest award that our organisation grants to scholars’.
