Obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular diseases are increasingly present in the population. Brown adipose tissue has a protective function against these prevalent diseases, as it burns calories and can produce body heat from fat. But as the body ages, the activity of brown adipose tissue decreases. This inactivation of brown adipose tissue — also typical of obese people — remains poorly studied in the scientific literature.

Bob Woodruff Foundation continues its commitment to women veterans

The Bob Woodruff Foundation (BWF) has given another grant to Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine for the continued expansion of the Women Veterans Network (WoVeN), a national, peer support network led by women veterans, for women veterans. This is the foundation’s fourth grant for WoVeN, bringing its total support for the program since 2020 to more than $900,000.

The Bob Woodruff Foundation grant to WoVeN was made possible by donations from the National Football League Salute to Service initiative and Craig Newmark Philanthropies.

New study suggests that PTSD is an important mental health comorbidity for veterans with diabetes

Nearly one in four U.S. adults over the age of 65 have diabetes. Older Veterans are highly impacted by this disease, in part due to risk factors incurred during their military service such as exposure to Agent Orange and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Diabetes requires active and ongoing daily self-management and increases the risk of developing other chronic health conditions, which negatively impact functioning and disability.

In a new study, researchers have found that veteran men and women with both PTSD and diabetes were at heightened risk of disability and poor physical health functioning compared with veterans with neither condition or PTSD and diabetes only. This is one of the first large-scale studies to investigate the impact of co-occurring PTSD and diabetes on functioning and disability outcomes.
