The BBVA Foundation Frontiers of Knowledge Award in Social Sciences has gone in this seventeenth edition to social psychologists Icek Ajzen (University of Massachusetts Amherst), Dolores Albarracín (University of Pennsylvania), Mahzarin Banaji (Harvard University), Anthony Greenwald (University of Washington), and Richard Petty (Ohio State University) for “revolutionizing the way we understand and measure attitudes” with an influence that extends to “psychology, sociology, political science, education, health, economics and other areas.”

Spectroscopy technique could improve surgery for pediatric epilepsy patients

A new study demonstrates the potential of Raman spectroscopy to improve surgical outcomes for pediatric patients with focal cortical dysplasia (FCD) type II, a leading cause of drug-resistant epilepsy. By analyzing the biochemical signatures of individual cells, researchers successfully distinguished abnormal FCD tissue from healthy brain cells with 96 percent accuracy. The technique also differentiated between two subtypes of FCD type II with 92 percent accuracy. These findings suggest that Raman spectroscopy, when used during surgery, could help surgeons precisely identify and remove only the affected tissue, improving seizure control and long-term outcomes for children with epilepsy.
