A new study co-authored by UCLA Health researchers found that nearly nine in ten emergency department patients have not received one or more recommended vaccines, with about half unaware that these vaccines were even recommended for them. The findings reveal critical gaps in preventive care among underserved populations who rely on emergency departments as their primary healthcare access point.

About 49% of people are unaware of one or more vaccines recommended for them. Further, 86% have not received one or more of these vaccines. These are the findings of a University of California, Riverside-led study -- the first national comprehensive vaccine surveillance study conducted in emergency departments.

An international research team led from Lund University, has identified epigenetic biomarkers that can predict which people with type 2 diabetes are at risk of cardiovascular disease. The study is published in Cell Reports Medicine.

About The Study: Stratified analyses in this study revealed that prediabetes was significantly associated with mortality only among younger adults (ages 20-54), highlighting the importance of age-specific interventions. Lifestyle behaviors, limited health care access, and life stage challenges may contribute to the increased mortality risk in younger adults. Early-onset health problems in this group may also reflect stronger genetic predispositions, leading to more rapid disease progression and more severe health outcomes. These findings underscore the need for tailored diabetes prevention programs targeting young adults—such as flexible, virtual, and peer-led options—to increase accessibility and engagement. Routine screening and timely referrals to age-appropriate programs are essential.
