Unlocking cells with electric fields: The expanding role of in vivo electroporation in therapy and biomedicine.
Tsinghua University PressEfficient and safe delivery of nucleic acids, proteins, and other biomacromolecules to target tissues in vivo remains a central challenge in gene therapy, cancer immunotherapy, and vaccine development. In vivo electroporation (IVE) offers a non-viral and controllable delivery strategy by transiently increasing cell membrane permeability through short, pulsed electric fields, enabling efficient intracellular transport of therapeutic agents. With recent advances in electrode design, pulse modulation, and intelligent control systems, IVE is rapidly evolving from a laboratory technique toward clinical implementation. These developments have expanded its potential applications in cancer therapy, nucleic acid vaccines, and genome editing, underscoring the need for a systematic and forward-looking overview of this emerging technology.

Selectivity and stability reshaping high-sensitivity detection boundaries: A technical leap and paradigm shift in semiconductor surface-enhanced Raman scattering
Tsinghua University PressMarking the 50th anniversary of surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS), a multidisciplinary Chinese research team presents a comprehensive Perspective in Nano Research, highlighting the paradigm shift toward rationally designed semiconductor substrates. The article details key enhancement strategies—including energy-level customization, amorphization, quasi-metallization, and morphology control—that enable ultrasensitive, molecule-selective detection. These advances have unlocked transformative applications in virus identification, food safety monitoring, gas sensing, and early cancer diagnosis. The authors emphasize that overcoming standardization challenges through multi-stakeholder collaboration is essential to bridge the lab-to-market gap and establish semiconductor SERS as a core platform for next-generation sensing and diagnostics.

New miniature two-photon microscope enables stable dual-color imaging in freely behaving mice
Chinese Society for Optical EngineeringPeer-Reviewed Publication
DUET, a dual-color miniature two-photon microscope published in PhotoniX Life, enables stable, low-crosstalk imaging of distinct neuron populations in freely behaving mice. By integrating dual hollow-core photonic bandgap fibers for independent 920-nm/1030-nm femtosecond pulse delivery with pixel-level temporal multiplexing, DUET overcomes motion-induced instability and fluorescence crosstalk. During tail suspension tests, DUET achieved robust dual-color calcium imaging at 8.4 Hz. This advance provides neuroscientists a powerful tool to monitor cell-type-specific neural interactions during natural behaviors.

Raman microscopy unmixed: A comprehensive guide to the molecular imaging technology reshaping biology
Chinese Society for Optical EngineeringPeer-Reviewed Publication
A newly published review article in Photonix Life provides one of the most comprehensive guides to date on Raman microscopy for biological imaging. Led by researchers at the University of California San Diego, the review systematically covers spontaneous and coherent Raman techniques, bio-orthogonal probes, biomedical applications ranging from cancer to neurodegenerative disease, and emerging frontiers including quantum-enhanced imaging and AI-driven diagnostics. By organizing technical advances along four parallel performance axes and evaluating the trade-offs of each approach, the review offers a practical decision-making resource for biologists considering Raman methods and for spectroscopists seeking impactful biological applications.
The protein microcrystallography beamline (BL18U1) at the Shanghai Synchrotron Radiation Facility
Nuclear Science and TechniquesPeer-Reviewed Publication
Structural biology relies on advanced crystallographic platforms to obtain high-quality diffraction data from challenging samples. The BL18U1 microcrystallography beamline at the Shanghai Synchrotron Radiation Facility (SSRF) demonstrates strong capability in beamline optics, microbeam delivery, multi-energy operation, integrated instrumentation, and anomalous diffraction experiments. Supporting protein crystals, small-molecule crystals, and other demanding samples, BL18U1 provides users with an efficient platform for high-quality data collection and has enabled the determination of a large number of high-quality crystal structures.
