Wind-Assisted Ship Propulsion (WASP) technologies represent innovative solutions for reducing emissions and fuel consumption in the maritime transport sector. To improve the performance of devices such as Flettner rotors, wind tunnel testing can provide valuable insights into their aerodynamic behavior and generate reliable experimental data for CFD validation.
The Department of Mechanical Engineering at Politecnico di Milano, in collaboration with KRISO (Korea Research Institute of Ships and Ocean Engineering), conducted an experimental campaign in the low-turbulence test section of the GVPM wind tunnel. The campaign aimed to characterize the aerodynamic behavior of the system at Reynolds numbers up to 8105, through measurements of aerodynamic forces and surface pressure distributions on the model, complemented by wake-flow visualizations.
