X-DIA is one of the aeroelastic models used at Politecnico di Milano to develop and test new aeroservoelastic control technologies. In the wind tunnel, these models reproduce the behaviour of a real aircraft at reduced scale, allowing researchers to investigate how aerodynamics, structural deformation and control systems interact during flight.
Equipped with sensors and actively controlled movable surfaces, X-DIA can “react” to aerodynamic disturbances as they occur. This makes it possible to test systems designed, for example, to reduce the structural effects of turbulence or to counteract aeroelastic instabilities such as flutter.
These experiments bring technologies initially developed through numerical models into the wind tunnel, where their behaviour can be tested under real physical conditions, contributing to the development of lighter, more efficient and safer aircraft.
