Figure 2 | Simulation of morphology- and rotation-induced optical torques and forces. a, Illustration of reversible morphology- and rotation-induced optical torques and optical forces in a 2D light field, which simplifies the 3D dynamics in optical trapping into a 2D model by converting the orbital degree into the lateral movement. This 2D model facilitates the investigation of those intriguing optical torques and optical forces on a single plane. b, Distribution of optical force vectors around the cylinder at two orientations. At forty-five degrees the negative vectors generate a counter-clockwise torque and an upward net force; at one hundred and fifty degrees the positive vectors reverse the torque. c, Simulated energy flow through a triangular prism, showing vortex-like distributions beneath the particle. d, Under left-handed light, large- and small-aspect-ratio cylinders settle at stable angles that drive them in opposite lateral directions; under right-handed light, both the stable angles and the drift directions are reversed.
