Pancreatic cancer is one of the deadliest cancers and among the hardest to treat, with most patients surviving less than a year after diagnosis. But a new drug developed at Northwestern University may soon help patients live longer.

Oregon Health & Science University has received more than $9 million in National Institutes of Health funding to develop advanced microphysiologic models — also known as organs‑on-a-chip — that recreate how cancers grow, spread and respond to treatment within bone and bone‑associated tissues.

The Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Family Foundation has donated $5.5 million to the University of Maryland Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Center (UMGCCC) to help advance groundbreaking scientific research and compassionate, state-of-the-art cancer care in Maryland and across the region. The National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated comprehensive cancer center is named in honor of Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum, who gave a transformative gift 30 years ago, after Mrs. Greenebaum’s successful treatment for breast cancer.

SAN DIEGO, APRIL 13, 2026 ― Jennifer Wargo, M.D., professor of Surgical Oncology and Genomic Medicine at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, has been elected to the 2026 class of Fellows of the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) Academy in recognition of her pioneering work to define interactions between the microbiome, cancer biology and treatment response. 

The Alliance for Clinical Trials in Oncology is now enrolling patients into a clinical trial aimed at helping women recover from the vaginal side effects of breast cancer treatment. Supported in part by a grant from the National Cancer Institute, the REVITALIZE study (Alliance A221801) will test if a laser therapy helps reduce vaginal dryness caused by breast cancer treatment, a painful side effect that can cause discomfort for many cancer survivors.

James P. Allison, Ph.D., Regental professor and chair of Immunology, vice president of immunobiology and founding director of the James P. Allison Institute™ at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, will be honored with the American Association of Cancer Research (AACR) Award for Lifetime Achievement in Cancer Research at the AACR Annual Meeting 2026.
