Rockville, MD (May, 6, 2026) – The American Society for Nutrition (ASN) announced today the appointment of Brian Lindshield, PhD, as Interim Editor in Chief of its open-access journal, Current Developments in Nutrition (CDN), effective July 1, 2026. Dr. Lindshield’s appointment supports continuity in editorial leadership while positioning the journal for continued growth and innovation in nutrition publishing.
Dr. Lindshield is a Professor and Associate School Director in the School of Health Sciences at Kansas State University. He brings extensive experience with ASN journals and a strong record of leadership in academic nutrition. From 2017 to 2023, he served as an academic editor for CDN and is a recognized advocate for open-access publishing and open educational resources. His research focuses on micronutrient-fortified foods and international nutrition interventions.
Since its launch, CDN has become an important, agile publishing platform serving the global nutrition community. As an ASN open-access journal, CDN plays a key role in expanding access to nutrition science for researchers, clinicians, and policymakers worldwide. The journal is committed to advancing high-quality research evaluated on scientific rigor and contribution to the field, rather than novelty alone.
"It’s a tremendous honor to serve as Interim Editor in Chief for Current Developments in Nutrition,” said Dr. Lindshield. “My connection to CDN dates back to its launch, when I coauthored the journal’s first published article. Since then, I’ve had the privilege of supporting the journal as an academic editor and contributor. I look forward to working closely with the editorial team, ASN leadership, reviewers, and authors to continue advancing CDN’s mission of publishing timely, well-conducted research.”
Dr. Lindshield’s appointment reflects ASN’s commitment to cultivating editorial leadership and supporting the next generation of scientific publishing leaders.
ASN also recognizes the extraordinary contributions of Jack Odle, PhD, whose term as Editor in Chief concludes on June 30, 2026. Over the past decade, Dr. Odle established CDN as a leading open-access journal, securing a strong initial impact factor, expanding its global reach, and strengthening editorial and peer review processes.
Under Dr. Odle’s leadership, CDN introduced manuscript transfer pathways to improve the author experience and support continued engagement within the ASN portfolio; piloted Guest Editor–led special issues and article-based publishing models; elevated emerging areas such as sustainability of food systems, implementation science, and food and nutrition of indigenous peoples through the creation of dedicated sections; and fostered the development of academic and associate editors, several of whom have advanced to leadership roles within ASN journals, including The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.
“It has been an honor to lead Current Developments in Nutrition as its inaugural Editor in Chief over the past decade. Advancing the scholarship of nutrition in this role has been a highlight of my career,” said Dr. Odle. “I am confident that Dr. Lindshield’s experience and vision will guide the journal to even greater success, and I am thankful to our editorial team, reviewers, ASN staff, and authors for their vital contributions.”
“Dr. Jack Odle didn’t just launch a journal -- he built a trusted home for well-conducted research across the breadth of nutrition science,” said Naïma Moustaïd-Moussa, PhD, FASN, FTOS, FAHA, FNAI, President, ASN. “As we look toward our Society’s Centennial, Dr. Lindshield is the perfect leader to build on that foundation. He represents the future of our field — a champion for open access and deeply committed to the success of every ASN author."
Be part of the momentum! Dr. Lindshield will be available to connect with attendees at ASN’s annual meeting, NUTRITION 2026, taking place July 25-28, 2026, in National Harbor, Maryland, just outside Washington, DC. Submit Late Breaking/Rapid Science & Encore Abstract Submissions through May 11.
