MDPI, the open access (OA) publisher, has announced a new partnership with the Italian Society of Gerontology and Geriatrics (Società Italiana di Gerontologia e Geriatria, SIGG). As a result, the society’s Journal of Gerontology and Geriatrics (JGG) has transferred publishing responsibilities to MDPI, beginning with Volume 74, Issue 1 (release date in March 2026).

Founded in 1953 as “Giornale di Gerontologia”, JGG was published for many years by the University of Florence and later by Pacini Editore. Over time, the journal has evolved in line with broader shifts in scholarly communication, transitioning to a digital-only format in 2014. In 2016, the journal adopted its current English title. JGG continues to be a leading platform for research, clinical experience, and thought leadership in the field of aging.

Prof. Gianluigi Vendemiale, editor-in-chief of JGG, said: "This collaboration marks an important step in further expanding the journal's global visibility, accessibility, and scientific impact. Our ambition is for JGG to become an even more vibrant, global platform for innovation in aging research—connecting science, practice, and policy."

SIGG’s partnership with MDPI represents a shared commitment to maintaining the highest standards of academic rigor, peer review, and editorial transparency. SIGG will retain journal ownership, while benefiting from MDPI’s operational expertise in OA.

Dr. Carla Aloè, head of societies and acquisition at MDPI, said: “We are grateful for the opportunity to support Italian research communities while building on SIGG’s long-standing legacy in Gerontology and Geriatrics. To this end, we warmly invite researchers, clinicians, and policy experts to join us in our mission to promote knowledge sharing and dignity in aging through Open Access.”
