Andy Jagoda, MD, Professor of Emergency Medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine of Mount Sinai, has received the prestigious Edward W. Gilmore Lifetime Achievement Award from the New York Chapter of the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP). He was presented with this honor Wednesday, July 9, at the New York ACEP Scientific Assembly in Bolton Landing, New York.

This award honors Dr. Jagoda for his significant contributions to the field through education, leadership, mentoring, and advancing the quality of emergency care. It recognizes Dr. Jagoda’s lifelong commitment to, and lasting impact on, the specialty of emergency medicine and New York ACEP.

“It has been an amazing privilege to be able to contribute to the growth of emergency medicine internationally, nationally, and in New York City, and see it emerge as a driving force in health care,” says Dr. Jagoda, also the Chair Emeritus of the Department of Emergency Medicine for Mount Sinai Health System. “When I came to Mount Sinai in 1995 there was no Emergency Medicine Residency Program, no funded research, and no formal presence in the medical school curriculum. Today our residency is one of the top programs in the country, our federally funded research ranks us in the top 10 of Emergency Medicine departments, and our medical school clerkship is required and ranked as one of the best clinical experiences by the medical students."

For the past 36 years, Dr. Jagoda has dedicated his career to advancing the practice of emergency medicine through leadership in education, research, and administration. Dr. Jagoda is nationally recognized for his involvement in Emergency Medicine education and for his work in the area of neurologic emergencies. He is a community advocate for patients with stroke, traumatic brain injury, and other emergent neurologic conditions. Dr. Jagoda represented the field of emergency medicine as a member of the Executive Committee of the Brain Attack Coalition at the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke. He also served on the Board of Directors of the Foundation for Education and Research in Neurologic Emergencies.

He is the past Chair of the ACEP Clinical Policies Committee and is widely recognized for the impact he has had on implementing evidence-based guideline methodology. He served as the ACEP ambassador to Italy, where he was involved in advancing the field of emergency medicine in this countries and developing new programs.

Dr. Jagoda has received a number of prestigious honors, including the New York ACEP Physician of the Year and Leadership Awards; the Distinguished Service Award from the Association of Academic Chairs of Emergency Medicine; the John Marx Award for Leadership, and Philanthropy Award from the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine Foundation; and the ACEP James D. Mill Award for Contributions to Emergency Medicine.
