MILWAUKEE, WI — Get ready to dig into science and fun! The American Society of Plant Biologists (ASPB) is thrilled to announce Plant Science Saturday, an exciting, hands-on community event taking place at the South Shore Farmers’ Market on Saturday, July 26, 2025. Designed for curious kids, families, and science lovers of all ages, this one-of-a-kind event brings the wonder of plants and the science behind them right to the heart of the community.

At Plant Science Saturday, visitors will explore interactive exhibits, kid-friendly experiments, and plant-based activities that uncover the secret lives of plants. From learning how roots find water to discovering how plants grow our food, attendees will step into the shoes of plant scientists and get a taste of the discovery that fuels the future of farming, sustainability, and life itself.

“Plants are the foundation of everything—from the food we eat to the air we breathe,” says Erin Friedman, Chair of ASPB’s Education Committee. “By engaging children and families early in plant science, we’re not only nurturing future scientists—we’re strengthening our communities’ connections to the land, to food systems, and to environmental stewardship.”

This vibrant collaboration between ASPB and the South Shore Farmers’ Market—a Milwaukee summer staple—embodies the spirit of local food, education, and community enrichment. Nestled by the scenic shores of Lake Michigan, the market provides the perfect backdrop for families to explore where food comes from and how plant science drives innovation in agriculture and sustainability.

Highlights of the day will include:

  • Hands-on science experiments for budding young plant scientists
  • “Meet a Plant Scientist” booths where kids can ask real researchers their biggest science questions
  • Plant crafts, seed planting stations, and microscope adventures
  • Free take-home activities so families can continue exploring plant science at home

This event is part of ASPB’s ongoing commitment to science outreach and STEM education, showing that the next great plant scientist could be a kid at the farmers’ market today!

Join us for a day of discovery, wonder, and community connection. Come grow with us!
