At top, the epidermis of a wild-type mouse is thick, and its granular layer is prominent. At bottom, the epidermis of a Satb1 knockout mouse is significantly thinner, and its granular layer is diminished. Satb1 controls the expression of many genes responsible for epidermal architecture.
