Respiratory infections are one of the most common reasons for seeking medical care. Researchers have developed a diagnostic tool that can accurately distinguish bacterial from viral infection, which promises to guide proper antibiotic use and combat antibiotic resistance. This material relates to a paper that appeared in the Jan. 20, 2016, issue of Science Translational Medicine, published by AAAS. The paper, by Ephraim Tsalik at Durham Veteran's Affairs Medical Center in Durham, NC, and colleagues was titled, "Host gene expression classifiers diagnose acute respiratory illness etiology."
