Using purified components in a test tube, the Mic60-Mic19 complex was shown to deform spherical liposomes into tubular structures, as visualized by electron microscopy. This indicates that the Mic60-Mic19 complex has a membrane-reshaping function which was shown to contribute to the formation of mitochondrial cristae.
