Diagram of a Flow Battery Stabilizing the Electric Power Grid (IMAGE)
Caption
In a sustainable future energy system, extra electrical energy from solar panels and wind turbines (top center) is stored in a flow battery during sunny and windy days. A cell stack converts the electrical energy into chemical energy that is then stored in water solutions in the two tanks. When the wind is not blowing and the sun is not shining, electrical energy is regenerated by pumping the solutions from the two tanks back into the cell stack.
