The team expected that blocking a protein called VPS34 would improve neuroblastoma immunotherapy by shutting down autophagy, the process cells use to recycle their own damaged parts. But, much of the benefit came from the VPS's second job, endolysosomal trafficking, or how it sorts and transports material through the cell.
