Rethinking the “marble rolling downhill” model of development (VIDEO)
Caption
A classical view of development imagines a cell as a marble rolling down a hill, gradually entering narrower grooves as its possible fates become more restricted. Özel explains how the new findings add an important layer to that model: late in development, shortly after a neuron’s final cell division, its identity is not simply the smooth continuation of the path that came before. Instead, each neuron must integrate cues about when and where it was born and what is happening around it to establish the specific combination of identity factors that defines the cell.
