Automated Lens Density Rises Steeply with Clinical Nuclear Cataract Severity Grades (IMAGE)
Caption
Box-and-whisker plot showing automated lens average density across 237 cataractous eyes stratified by Lens Opacities Classification System III (LOCS III) nuclear opalescence grades (NO2–NO6). Box color intensifies from light teal (grade 2, mildest) to dark blue (grade 6, most severe), reflecting opacity progression. Boxes denote interquartile range with median values marked by white horizontal lines; whiskers extend to 1.5× the interquartile range. Mean lens average density increased progressively from 69.8 (NO2) to 82.9 (NO6), demonstrating a strong monotonic correlation with clinical severity (Spearman ρ = 0.804, P <0.001). This validates that the automated biomarker captures clinically meaningful nuclear sclerosis gradations.
