The structural model above illustrates the schizorhodopsin (SzR1) trimer, a seven-transmembrane (7TM) protein, embedded in a hydrated lipid bilayer, which mimics the cell membrane. Below is a picture of the 0.4 mm MAS rotor used to achieve the 160 kHz ultrafast MAS solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements required to adequately resolve the 7TM protein in a lipid bilayer. MAS is a technique used in solid-state NMR spectroscopy to improve the spectral data from large proteins or solid samples.
