Samples of the surface film, which acts as a filter between seawater and the atmosphere, were also important for the investigations. To collect these, a glass plate is immersed in the water; when it is withdrawn, the surface film adheres to it. The sample is then transferred from the glass plate into a bottle, frozen and later chemically analysed in the laboratory.
