Diversity as a Buffer (IMAGE)
Caption
The buffering effects of (a) a diverse ecosystem are contrasted with (b) the reduced buffering capacity of a less diverse ecosystem when confronted with a disturbance such as an invasive species or environmental change. Greater buffering capacity can enhance an ecosystem's ability to adapt, recover, and continue providing important ecological services under changing environmental conditions.
