Ateneo de Manila University researchers have developed Herbularyo, a fast-paced educational card game that uniquely teaches both organic chemistry and Filipino folklore by placing players in the role of traditional healers who match medicinal plants and their active compounds with specific illnesses.
Drawing on scientifically-validated remedies documented by the Philippine Institute of Traditional and Alternative Health Care in the Encyclopedia of Common Medicinal Plants of the Philippines Volume 3, the game brings Filipino folklore into play to help students understand the organic chemistry behind familiar backyard medicinal plants like guava, yerba buena, ampalaya, and aloe vera.
Classroom tests showed significantly improved learning among high school and college students, suggesting that local traditions can make complex science more accessible, engaging, and culturally meaningful.
