Scenes from Dr. Samba Reddy’s laboratory, where he and his research team are investigating ways to intervene early in the brain’s decline after severe traumatic brain injury. Using sodium butyrate, a naturally occurring gut chemical, their research found reduced brain inflammation, improved memory and mood, protected brain cells, made seizures both rarer and harder to trigger, and even promoted the growth of new brain cells—pointing to a future that could cure epilepsy.
