Lead author Aurore Monnereau performing laboratory work. The lab work was undertaken at the Ancient DNA facility at the Department of Archaeology, University of York. Monnereau can be seen working in the clean room where DNA is extracted from archaeological bone. This facility ensures that the archaeological remains are protected from modern DNA contamination. Later steps in the process include amplifying the DNA so that it can be sequenced, and these steps are performed in a separate laboratory.
