Higher Temps Mean Some Bees Can Spend Less Time Incubating Young (IMAGE)
Caption
A new study finds bumble bees with belowground nests don’t seem to experience negative effects associated with higher temperatures, because the nests are insulated from the heat aboveground. And the increase in temperatures means workers can spend less time incubating the brood and more time foraging, which is beneficial. However, periods of extreme heat can cause enough harm to offset those benefits. This image is a still from a thermal video used to observe incubation behavior during the study.
