Collecting sediments from a 7,000-year-old fossil reef exposed in the Dominican Republic. When sieved, 10 kilograms of this reef matrix can yield hundreds of tiny fish ear stones (otoliths), each one a chemical record of what a fish ate on a reef that existed thousands of years before human impact.
