While standard, bulky spectrometers lose sensitivity in the near infrared (top), this new miniature chip uses specialized surface textures and AI to detect signals that are normally invisible (bottom). The data demonstrate this performance boost, showing clear detection peaks beyond 950 nanometers, while conventional silicon devices plateau. This innovation enables a sensor smaller than a millimeter to perform complex light analysis that was previously possible only with bulky laboratory equipment.
